How real is the FA's ultimate authority?

Questions to experts:
1. Is the FA's authority real? can they throw anyone out by just complaining about the passengers "attitude", "behavior" etc?
2. Most often the baggage size is not enforced. Why make a" selective" fuss at one passenger? I have seen it happen again and again.
3. Why do the police take the FA's word without any investigation of the matter? Are we guilty until proven innocent? Considering that most often the Airline eventually give in and compensate the passenger (In genuine cases), wouldn't it be worthwhile to have on on demad "jury" of other passenger? No one would tolerate a drunk or belligerent passenger; on the other hand, no one would tolerate an abusive FA either.
Passengers do bring luggage that often seem to defy the laws of physics regarding size and matter. I see little difference between my early childhood memories of passengers on Indian buses and trains carrying Jack fruit and banana bunch and the passengers in a modern jetliners. I remember the slogan, "less luggage and more comfort-make travel a pleasure".
I don't buy the precisous cargo story. Most people carry laptops, cameras, binoculars, jewellery etc. If they are that precious send by insured post or carry them safely in a size that wouldn't attract attention.
