Having not yet done a redemption of my AS miles for anything, I can't tell you whether or not it's an easy thing or not to do.

I do think, though, that redeeming them is a smarter thing to do than attempting to transfer. Points.com will let you transfer AS to AA, but your 20k will turn into about 9 AA miles, or something equally insipid.
