IIRC last summer when I flew to MEL, we cleared security at SYD, then headed up to the gate for boarding to MEL (albeit after spending a bit of time at the NZ lounge). Not sure if they still do the security check, but this is important should you have bought duty free, or want to keep a bottle of water.
