I called AAdvantage. Eventually ended up talking to customer services. I was asked to write them a letter explaining in detail the whole thing. They are of the initial opinion that BA acted wrongly as the award is clearly a business class award.
As for compensation, I am not sure what I think makes sense now. I would like to be able to make the trip the way it was supposed to be. I would happily return the unused portions of the ticket and get the same exact award issued again -same route, but maybe this time on CX to avoid the chance of the same thing happening again.
I will post an update when I get a final reply from AA.
