"Direct" is probably an overstatement. I'm guessing that the screener can always pro-actively offer a private screening ... and given that the passenger knows what's in the bag, the passenger may be highly likely to accept the offer. It's still the passenger's choice, but one can be proactive in letting the passenger know about their options.
