It seems to me that if they offer an upgrade in addition to what your profile preference is, that is on them.

I have had this happen to me a couple times and when I asked for the internet charges to be removed when checking out, an argument about My Way™ benefits usually ensues. They do end up taking off the charge in the end, but it's always after they act like they're doing me a big favor and treating my like I'm some kind of cheat.
I'm facing a similar situation with an upcoming stay at a FS Hilton. My profile currently is set for the upgrade/free breakfast "Myway" preference, but I likely will change it to free internet before my trip. I emailed the hotel in advance with some questions about room features, and the Executive Level chief concierge responded to my questions and volunteered that the hotel would upgrade me to an Executive Level room.

I don't want to be in the situation of feeling like I am taking advantage of the situation and/or arguing about internet charges, so now I'm debating about whether I should email back to him and politely decline the room upgrade, or just change my "Myway" preference and confirm at check-in that I want free HSIA v the upgrade/breakfast as my Diamond benefit. Any thoughts on this?
