From jumping around from that article, it appears that this is actually a common issue, but that there weren't that many instances of it last year.
A British study for the House of Lords found fume events in 1 of every 2,000 flights. In the U.S., airlines are required to report "fume events" to the Federal Aviation Administration. There were 108 such reports last year.http://www.wibw.com/nationalnews/hea.../53504077.html
