As everyone has said, I too found the idea of "transiting" PVG was non-existent.

I had to wait in line an hour to clear immigration at PVG and then claim bags and pass through customs and then go back upstairs to check in at the TG desk and pass through security again.

I would suggest an alternate as well.

If you arrive PVG on-time, you will most likely have to wait in the main check-in lobby landside for the UA counter to open up.
Until the desk opens up which is when you will want to get your lounge pass, you should just head upstairs to the nice coffee shop that has comfy chairs near the top of the escalator. Around 9:30 you can head back downstairs to check in and get the ANA lounge pass where you can enjoy some nice rest in their Business Lounge covered recliner sleeping area (these little recliners are in a small area all the way at the end of the louge (North end of the lounge I think). Have some nice coffee or tea and rest peacefully until your flight is boarding.

Transiting in PVG is as described-- you get to go through the whole process I think, but that early in the morning you will not have much of a line at customs I suspect. If you cannot get alternate routing, at least enjoy the nice airport. If you are checking in at UA, say hi to the Senior Gate Agent Peter Xie-- he is one of the nicest people in all of UA.^
