FYI - the taxes on my JFK-HKG-SIN (no stopover) award in F was about $17. Booked a couple weeks ago.
You can stopover in either Honolulu or big island, Kona. Japan airlines goes to both those places from Tokyo. You are allowed one stopover each way. So that is why my round-trip has two stopovers .
