I had an op-up on AF JFK/CDG without asking. Y was oversold and upon boarding was given a new b/p for J. I was a Gold Medallion at the time and was told "Merci for your loyalty to SkyTeam". So anything is possible, but they need to be oversold in Y.
Best to get a seat assignment though........ I had one.
