I doubt it. Why would they bother to deny check-in if their only interest is making sure that CBP accepts them into the country and that can be done before boarding?
I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. The airline has to make sure you have appropriate entry documents for your destination country before check-in. if you do not, they can deny you check in.
