One reason is that one's status from the previous benefit year can still show on the boarding pass. There's no proof that you've requalified and are actually a current STARGold unless you can show a current card, or a statement print out dated after March 1st (or in UA's case, February 1st).

BTW OP didn't say which MLL it was and what flight/carrier he was flying.
