Miles-for-upgrades exchange?
I read this on another site and had never heard of this. Any comments on whether this is true?

The basic premise is this: exchange the four earned electronic upgrades you get for each 10k Q-miles flown for an additional 10,000 miles. Supposedly, you can only pull this off if you fly "mostly" international because in that case, you would not have an opportunity to use your earned upgrades. I think luck might be more of a factor though. This is approximately how my phone conversation went:
Phone 1-800-xxx-xxxx ... ring ... navigate the menu and request to talk to a real live person.
Agent: AAdvantage Platinum Desk, this is ____. How can I help you?
Me: Hello, I'd like to exchange my earned upgrades for miles, please.
Agent: Oh, I'll have to transfer you to Customer Service. Please hold.
Lesson here: Next time, just call 1-800-882-8880 and ask for Customer Service.
Agent 2: AAdvantage Customer Service, this is ____. How can I help you?
Me: Hi, I'd like to exchange my earned upgrades for miles, please.
Agent 2: Sure, how many would you like to exchange?
Me: My four earned upgrades, please.
Agent 2: (Brief pause, some typing sounds) All done, that's 10,000 bonus miles added to your account. Can I help you with anything else today?
Me: No, thank you very much. Have a good day, bye! (Hang up)
Me: (to myself) Gosh, that was easy
