We're planning about a 3-month RTW (round the world) trip in a couple years, but we have an addition to our family coming next month so we need to be able to find
rooms that would accommodate our family of five. (The kids will be almost 9, 6 and almost 2.)
We'll be using airline miles for the flights (150k AA miles each for OW150Cs that lets us fly 25k miles in Business) and would like to use hotel points for at least half of the hotel stays (and pay cash or cash & points for the cheaper ones). The two chains we would like to focus on are Hilton (where I'm Diamond) and Starwood (where I am Gold but will status match to Platinum). I started a
separate thread for Hilton suggestions. The big challenge that I know we're going to face is that many hotels WON'T allow more than four people in a room. Bedding isn't an issue. Right now, then kids (currently 6 and 4) actually prefer to sleep on the floor, on blankets. They argue who "has to" sleep in the bed.
We're pretty flexible on where we will be going. There's beautiful stuff to see all around the world. Our selection of destinations will be guided by the following:
1) Places where AA or their One World partners fly, which is just about anywhere. Our current thinking is to focus in the northern hemisphere (to keep it under 25k miles), but we're not set on that. It'll likely be January through March, so the weather will be nicer in the southern hemisphere.
2) While many of the hotels won't be anything special, we would like to include some of the ultra-nice hotels and resorts if they can accommodate 5.
3) If we can find any locations that can accommodate 5 in standard rooms, that will be a huge factor. We really don't want to have to split into two rooms, because that will more than double our hotel expenses.
4) Some of the locations we would most like to visit (assuming we stay in the northern hemisphere) include Europe (Italy, France, Greece, UK), Israel, Dubai, Phuket, Tokyo, and Hawaii.
5) We prefer Hilton and Starwood, because of the status. We wouldn't be opposed to Hyatt (we could status match there) or Bed & Breakfasts, but that's really beyond the scope of this thread.
So with that being said, what hotels and resorts in the Starwood chain can you recommend that would accommodate a family of five?
