I guess all those vacationers don't know how to read after being on a cruise or the beach. The sunshine must too be strong for their feeble brains to function once inside an airport.
Every airport I fly through has a guard watching the Elite line - if they didn't, chaos would ensue, and the FLL demographic is notorious for line poaching. Back when T1 had the old set of guards, I regularly called them over to remove poachers who ducked under the ropes to sneak into the Elite line after they were told which line they should be in.

Until they moved the line and staffed it with a guard, it was chaos complete with nasty remarks and pushing and shoving matches.

IAH, EWR, LAX, and SEA all have line guards - those are my frequent airports. I'm sure others do as well. Instead of complaining, be thankful they are staffing it with someone to ensure its exclusivity.
