Mallya's joining oneworld started from what I am told by internal high ups with a discussion between BA and IT about collaborating on India - LHR flights.
9W was seriously threatening BA's historical hold on us INDIA-UK fliers and IT was making no headway with its flights ex BOM and BLR, which still fill up the last after the 9W and BA afternoon departures.
The result was a lot more than either party initially anticipated, and IT is now joining oneworld.
Jet has nothing left to join. Skyteam is as said above crap and now 9W is going to seriously start feeling the pinch once we all switch to fly with our alliance carriers (AI with star at IT with OW).
It hasn't impacted 9W yet, but as soon as formal integration happens, IT is going to gain access for all domestic travel a bunch of BA gold card holders that have been waiting for consolidation of miles and status with domestic flights counting toward their global status.
