US CBP will let you pass the border but, depening on the agent you get, you might get an earful about how "irresponsible" you are, how we are living in a "post 9/11-era", how they are being nice to let you "get away with this", etc. But as a US Citizen, they do have to admit you if they are satisifed that you are a US Citizen which they will be with an expired passport. You shouldn't have a big problem, but expect it to take a little extra time.
