Make sure you visit the Beaches neighbourhood (locals call it the Beach). It is a 45 minute streetcar ride (take the Queen car eastbound). There is a nice boardwalk by the lake, great restaurants etc along Queen st. A lot of fun on a warm spring day.
(It is also very gay friendly. Holding hands will not be an issue anywhere, except perhaps for your shy boyfriend. I'm not a big one for public displays of affection myself, and tend not to hold hands with my boyfriend anywhere, so you may need to let that one go...)
Will have to keep that first suggestion in mind. Always like doing things like that. In Halifax, I can't tell you how many times we've walked up and down the harbour boardwalk.
I'm not going to hold him to it, but we would both rather know we wouldn't get any funny looks if we wanted to. He has made long strides in being less shy. (I've slowly gotten better myself.) In fact, on the last few times he's accompanied me to the airport, he'll even kiss me in the middle of the check-in area, before I head to the line for security and US Customs. I consider that a huuuge jump!
