I have never flown Southern China, so I can not speak about them as an airline. But, normally when I am flying to far away destinations I just want to get there as quickly as possible. Even if it does mean suffering through a 15 hour flight. I do Dubai to the east coast about 3 times a year and one time I had it routed through AMS. It was nice for a break but when we took back off I could not help thinking to myself that if I would have taken the direct to IAD or JFK I would have been there already.
...whereas I am the exact opposite. I much prefer to break up long flights if at all possible, and will intentionally look for a connection to break up the journey, and if possible, even take a one-day layover. It really depends on your own psychological and physical make-up as to which you prefer. Then you have to add in the difference in airline quality to make the final decision.
