I can see cheaper fares on expedia - if you like the idea of V Australia. UA is usually quite competitive, but it seems they have finially realised that they'll go broke by giving away seats.

July is a busy period for northern traffic. If it coincides with Oz school holidays, that only reinforces the demand assumptions in the airlines revenue managment offices.

I would think you have a good fare - if you are comfortable paying it. Fares are a gamble, but IMHO the trend is upwards in fares. Getting it now also gives you a better chance of getting seats you might like.

Edited: Indeed, if you like the idea of LAX, fares on expedia from SYD are about $300 cheaper - on V Australia and Air NZ.
