after digging the letter out the letter again, i still didn't find anything that talks about charter members, except for this plastic thing that says you are one.
My letter says

"Dear Mr. Stardal,

Congratulations! In 2010, you will be a charter member of our Diamond Medallion(R) level - a new elite tier launching on March 1, 2010, that will offer the richest set of rewards of any airline."

(emphasis theirs).
