Above I gave the link to the Cessoalpino site which gives the delays for every train, for every day. It also shows which type of train operated the service. Regarding comfort, I will be trying out one of these trains in a couple of days, and will report back!

I certainly remember when riding Cisalpino a couple of years ago, some of the trains were locomotive-hauled, i.e., former SBB (Swiss) compartment and open cars painted in Cisalpino livery, and some were ETR 470s. Sometimes when the ETRs failed on the way to Stuttgart, they were even replaced with SBB coaches. I was on a Milan-Basel ETR 470 last August which failed in Brig, requiring passengers to transfer to internal SBB services.
Yes, there were a few loco-hauled trains but not now, I believe, except, as you say, possibly for operational reasons.
