I am in a similar situation as the OP,but with the regular HH Amex.

My Gold status is good through 3/12. I don't want or need to upgrade to Surpass, as Hilton is not my primary stay choice.

I will use the card for my Hilton stays only this year and return all spending on it next year till 20K.For me, gold status is fine-if I stayed more often at Hilton I'd go for Surpass. Now if they offered Surpass fee free,then I'd jump,but I cannot see that happening.
