Last minute rewards are really "expensive." I've paid 80K plus 'taxes' to do YOW-LGA with only a week's notice. Some would say it wasn't worth it, except to buy a seat then - it was the May 24th weekend - was also insanely expensive. And when the opportunity arose we decided to jump at it in order to make a great memory (the weekend itself, not spending 80K for a 15K reward!)
So, now is the time to plan well in advance for a trip. The best value awards need to be booked 10+ months in advance. Don't leave it until AP's website reminds everyone that they only have 24 months to use their points or you'll find very few seats available anywhere.
Well, it depends on where you are and where you're flying. Flights within Asia would be with *A partners. Also, since there are no AP "ClassicPlus" reward seats (the "last minute rewards"), it's not more expensive: either there are rewards seat(s) available or there are none. For example, I just booked a rewards trip for my Mrs. on J from BKK-FCO (Rome)-YYZ-CDG (Paris)-BKK: flights on AC and TG about a month ago for a trip that's coming up in a couple of weeks. You definitely need to watch for holidays (global, regional and national) such as Easter, Chinese New Year, March Break, etc. - where rewards availability dips.
@Belinik, you should definitely take advantage of the fact that travel with Asia I is only 20K in Y and 30K in J, as it's a pretty large area geographically (down to SIN with BKK covered). Perhaps go for a reunion somewhere in Asia I (that's what we're doing later this year).
