Question about My Way™ benefts: HSIA vs. upgrade/breakfast
I hate that this is even being discussed, with Hyatt initiating free internet for elites last year, and SPG following suit just last month for Platinum SPG members. But I digress.
Hilton (as in Hilton branded properties), as we all know, still says you have to choose between a room upgrade/free breakfast or HSIA. My question is, if you have the HSIA option selected in your profile... and the hotel automatically upgrades you anyway when you check in, are you obligated to pay for the internet access if you accept the room upgrade? It seems to me that if they offer an upgrade in addition to what your profile preference is, that is on them.
I have had this happen to me a couple times and when I asked for the internet charges to be removed when checking out, an argument about My Way™ benefits usually ensues. They do end up taking off the charge in the end, but it's always after they act like they're doing me a big favor and treating my like I'm some kind of cheat.
First of all, it's their system, and if they don't know how to use it properly (check my profile before assigning my room), then it's not my fault. I hate to feel like I'm "gaming the system" but Hilton is the one that forces these games... especially when I feel that HSIA should be an included benefit anyway (and most other hotel chains agree). Am I really obligated to turn down the room upgrade in advance if I plan on using the HSIA?
I'm just wondering what others experiences are with this issue.
