First of all I booked the Verve Hotel in Queens. It was $700 dollars for 4 nights for a room with a jacuzzi in it, breakfast and wifi so about $175/night inc all taxes. A bit more than I was hoping to spend but I couldn't see anything else I liked in the same price range in Manhattan.
For the last 3 nights I booked Club Quarters World Trade Centre for £181 for 3 nights inc all taxes and breakfast.
It's a bit strange that the Verve is a 2.5* and Club Quarters is 4* yet 3 times cheaper but there you go, that's what I found. I'm not too bothered if the hotel has breakfast or not but I'd like the price to reflect that I'd have to buy something elsewhere if the hotel I book doesn't include it.
I have two questions:
1) Is the Queens hotel in a good location to get around to see the central Manhattan sites & does it seem an ok price?
2) Our flight arrives at JFK at 11.10pm on a Monday night. Is the subway safe to get with our suitcases from JFK to Queensborough Plaza around 1am?
You could probably do better than $175 for a Queens Hotel albeit you might not be in walking distance to a subway stop (although some hotels have shuttles). Have you tried Priceline or Hotwire? I stayed at the Fairfield Inn last year in Queens while my apartment was being painted for $50 per night plus tax on Hotwire. Brand new hotel with breakfast included and there was a shuttle to the 7 subway line. If you are near the Queens Plaza station then yes the "E", "7" or the "R" will get you into midtown within 10 minutes or so. The subway is safe late at night but occassionally there will be a group of loud drunks, annoying but harmless.
