Yes it is a strong statement, however there are a combination of factors coming in to play:
1. Excellent repeat guest recognition- even little things like the bellman who says "Welcome home..."
2. The F&B outlets are great- Basil is very good for Thai, and I appreciate the Sunday brunch at the Living Room which is outstanding.
3. The pool area is well organized- the one thing I could wish for is for the staff to be just a little more responsive (they are extremely polite however a little lacsadasical here).
4. Front Desk is very good- and I have never had a problem with a late check out etc.
5. I really like to have breakfast at Sala- a peaceful and wonderful way to start the day.
6. For me the grande suites are well set up- and with the view of the lake very relaxing- they are not that big, however for 2 people they are perfect (especially the 012 numbered ones which are basically two rooms with a connecting door and changed furniture).
7. The direct connection to the skytrain is fantastic- I can be at client meetings within 15 minutes, and down to the Paragon area in 10. The Metro right across the street is also very useful depending on where you are going.
8. In the immediate area are a number of wonderful restaurants- including my favorite in Bangkok Bo.Lan which is one skytrain stop and a 5 minute walk away. The Long Table right around the corner is also a very nice place for a drink prior to dinner or afterwards.
9. The concerige is great at getting the reservations you need, and the hotel responds to emails within hours of sending them even on weekends.
10. The buisness centre does a good job of getting things printed the way you want them.
So.. those are my top 10 reasons.
I do like the Four Seasons for service, but the continuing noise from the St.Regis project next door is not very relaxing.
The PEN for me has a poor location and has been quite crowded in the past few months.
The Oriental is nice for a first time visitor to BKK, however after one stay I would say it is pretty much done- the area around the river is very nice around sunset, however getting there and away is a pain. I would suggest the China Grill for dinner, even if it is one of the most expensive restaurants in Thailand for what you eat.
Of course, everyone has their own favorites- I know some people who love the new Centara Grand, others who swear by the Eugenia off Soi 31, one person who loves the penthouse suite at the Arun Residence, and on and on- for me, for now, the SGS is doing a very good job.
