I haven't done this with a hotel in China yet but I have done it with Ctrip and it worked fine. My feeling is that if it is a reputable hotel, particularly one that is franchised by a chain that has someplace you can contact outside of China, the risk is acceptable. After all, they are going to be seeing both the front and back of your card eventually anyhow!
