An aviation safety friend of mine told me that Lufthansa and the top tier international carriers are an order of magnitude safer than Garuda and Garuda is an order of magnitude safer than the other domestic carriers. I flew some dodgy airlines in Indonesia including Simpati and Bouraq (sounds like Brrrroke), but paid a premium in all cases to fly Garuda.
