My wife's experience (she has no concept of travelling light) is that CX always gives her an extra 5 kg of leeway in addition to whatever the rule says, and often more. They tend to draw the line at 10 kg over. But she has been MPC silver for many years. When we travel as a family of 4, we have been >20 kg over our formal total allowance without any difficulty.

If you have no FF status with them, then it's pot luck. Check-in within Asia tends to be more relaxed unless it's a full-to-bursting flight. Check-in desks down under are generally more officious.
