I'm trying to plan a trip to CZM or CUN, and I'm really confused about the O fares. This is what I am hearing:

1) According to the AA website, O fares between Latin America and North America don't earn miles.

2) Some FTers have received miles for these fares

Is this correct? Is there a pattern to what does and doesn't earn miles? (e.g. Mexico does but not Costa Rica, or only MEX earns the miles)

Also, strictly by the rules, if I fly DFW-MIA-CUN, will I get miles for the DFW-MIA segment, but not the MIA-CUN? If no, do people generally slip through the cracks and still get miles for these?

I'm considering calling AA, but I wanted to make sure this isn't a DO NOT CALL situation.
