Ahmed Ressam for one who was, according to CBP agent Diana Dean, was acting "hinky". We'll never know whether the pax in this case was acting in a similiar manner and your built-in default is that he wasn't whereas I'm willing to believe the flight crew wouldn't push the panic button without some concerns.

I'm done giving people a pass in the name of "security". The word "suspicious" has unfortunately taken on a whole new meaning in the last decade and I consider that to be unacceptable.
IOW you expect perfection in an imperfect world. I'm not one for handing out blank cheques for institutions to run the world as they see fit but will trust that the good sense of a flight crew taught to recognize behavorial patterns are acting in good faith though like the rest of us they may be are flawed and imperfect.
