There is nothing as easy and as cheap as renting a minivan or SUV at LAX. I have personally rented them many, many times at LAX and have never ever paid more than $35/day, and I usually pay $25/day or less.

All rent-a-car companies at LAX are off-airport and are served by free shuttle buses. All the companies have dozens of minivans and SUVs that they are begging to have someone rent.

I only rent cars by bidding on Priceline.com Name Your Own Price. You don't know in advance which of the Big Five companies has your car until your credit card is charged. And you'll pay a lot less. Other than that, the process is exactly the same.

Bid $25 for an SUV for the duration of your stay. If that doesn't work, bid $18 for an economy car. When you get to the counter, just ask if you can upgrade to an SUV. You will be charged $8 or $10 a day extra (over the price of your economy car).

Do not rent from the Hertz Local Edition at the LAX Hilton.
