I am gold and for the hilton properties in the US, i have been upgraded about 50% of the time. If there is a big event in the town you are staying then forget about it. The best time for me was the middle of the week. The weekends of course are a little harder. You may want to search the city you are going to be in to see if an event (major concert, festival, convention) is going on.
