Renewing Travel Insurance

I am due to fly BA on 8th March, return 16th, landing back 17th. My BA annual travel insurance is due to expire on 18th. I haven't received a renewal notice, so called BA to see if I can organise renewal now, to start on expiry of my current insurance. I'm concerned my inbound flight is affected by strike action, and I get stuck overseas, with no insurance.

BA said I can renew, but it would go from today, therefore losing 23 days of my current insurance. Even if I receive a renewal notice, it would go from the date I called them to renew. Surely this can't be right? I was with Boots for years, and their insurance just renewed on the date the other expired, like car insurance. I'm told BA insurance doesn't work like this. How many people actually call up on the date of expiry, to renew?

If I go to another insurance company, as there's a possibility of strike action, I probably wouldn't be covered if stuck downroute. I just can't win really.

Amazing.
