I searched but couldn't find anything on this question.

I was hoping to sponsor a domestic upgrade for a friend of mine who is coming to visit me. Apparently under the new rules, I can do so easily with 15,000 miles and a $50 co-pay (not exactly a bargain, but then again, it's not for me)--but I was told by an agent today that I can't enter my credit card number to pay for the copay, it must be presented at check-in! Which of course won't work.

Is this really true? Is there a workaround?
