Catch 22 upgrading to business on Turkish Air

Hi,

This is my first posting on Flyer Talk and could use some advice. I'm planning to travel to Turkey for my honeymoon this May on the Turkish Air non-stop from ORD or IST. I have a ton of miles on United and wanted to upgrade to Business Class. I called Turkish Airlines to see if there were upgrades available but they said that I had to:

1. Book in B or Y Class
2. Only after I had bought my ticket, would they be able to tell me if I could use miles to upgrade.

So I have a few questions:
1. When booking they had for fare options:
Economy Restricted
Economy Semi-flexable (+$550 per ticket)
Economy Fully-flexable (+$750 per ticket)
Business (+$4,000 per ticket)

They did not say which of these qualify for upgrades... can someone tell me which are B and Y

2. Anyone have an idea on how I can tell if I can upgrade with miles without purchasing the ticket in advance? The website is unclear whether or not I can refund without a change fee (even for the fully-flexable) although I assume you can.

If this doesn't workout, I was going to go another route... but would love to take the no-stop.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
AKM
