"Upgrade Cert" for Medallions... makes sense domestically???

Does it ever make sense for a Medallion Flier to use a "Systemwide Upgrade Certificate" on a domestic flight? It doesn't, right?

I mean, you'll either get upgraded on your complimentary upgrade, or there aren't any, right? Or is this a way to "guarantee" yourself a seat and skip the "gate lottery"?

I understand the reason internationally, but just curious domestically.

Thanks!!
