Yea, just a wee bit outside. Like "40 minutes by shinkansen" outside. There is really nothing to see or do in Nagano town proper. Karuizawa is far nicer, although the Hoshinoya itself is not that close to Karuizawa town, but maybe a 15 minute taxi ride.
