An interesting observation I've experienced is that when reverse thrusters are used, the aircraft inches forward very slightly, then begins to back up.
I've heard conflicting reasons why this is done. One is that reverse thrusting your way back from the gate can cause the front landing gear to twist round the wrong way, messing up the wires.
As previously posted, it doesn't look like aircraft travelling backwards is an intended technical spec.
