Seriously, what is point of cabin crew "pointing out" exits?

I can't honestly see the value added by cabin crew "pointing out" the nearest exits. The announcement says they are at the front, back and overwing (where relevant), so how does a bit of generic arm waving help the issue?! It really bugs me when the front crew member often makes it seem as if the front exits are actually at row 1 rather than in the forward galley. I think that if at all the crew member should take it in turns to only point the exits which they are standing next to.

Is it a legal thing? Do they have to do a physical rendition?
