using a surge protector when traveling to France?

Hi,
My husband and I are going to Paris together and will have 2 MacBooks with which we would like to use a surge protector.

I am considering this Tripp Lite surge protector, which has a French wall plug and universal outlets:

I am also considering the Universal 220/250V Surge Protector Strip:

It has an American wall plug and universal outlets. It can be adapted to any grounded style in the world with grounded adapter plugs.

Since my husband also travels to the UK and Australia, the 2nd option might be more economical in the long run, though I have to admit that I'm a bit concerned about using an adapter plug on the wall plug of a surge protector (perhaps this is irrational).

I'd appreciate any input [or better suggestions]. thanks
