SXM bills itself as the Caribbean capital of cuisine. I like the place a lot. Philipsburg has duty free shopping, restaurants and a bit of night life. But the traffic can be bad (but not NYC bad), especially when there are 2 or 3 cruise ships in the harbour. Marigot is a bit more relaxed. From SXM you can very easily visit St. Barts, Saba or Anguilla by ferry or plane. Unique things to do: watch the wide bodies land at SXM from the Sunset Beach Bar. Best viewing times are posted on their website. Orient Beach on the north of the island. If you are a history buff, there are old forts on both the French and Dutch sides, but nothing as elaborate or as well maintained as El Morro.
