"Serious" is a relative term. If there are no life-threatening injuries, then why not just continue to the original destination. Diverting--even for a fractured leg--is a big deal.
"Even for a fractured leg"? Complications of a broken or fractured leg be quite serious. Not to mention painful. Can you imagine sitting (in E-?! or even in E+, for that matter) for 10 hours with a broken leg just to save UA some money and hassle?
I certainly hope preliminary reports are incorrect...
