But my curiosity is raised: If the Captain felt that the aircraft should be inspected in Japan, why wait ? That's an awfully long trip over nowhere. Why not Anchorage or even SEA, where Boeing as well as UA people could be waiting for them.

BTW, as N1120A alludes here, there's now a "companion" thread re the IAD-NRT flight yesterday which reports injuries.
