It's a bad experience, no doubt.

Put yourself in the position of the person in the seat next to you. Would you really accept or want to be the victim of a police search or warrant based on no more evidence than a statement "they sat next to me and when I got back to my destination my stuff was gone"? It wouldn't even be fair to accuse someone of this.
