Severe Turbulence Flt 835 ORD-PVG 2/19/2010

I guess I thought it was pretty bad as I was instantly trying to make it back to my seat while holding the o/h bins on either side of the aisle but it was really tough to hang on. Listened on Channel 9 after making into my seat and belting in firmly-- pilot asked for immediate clearance to drop FL34 to FL30 and was granted permission. We were over Western Alaska-- beautiful mountains adjacent to plains. Reports of moderate to severe turbulence were discussed and clearance was granted on the spot. We literally dropped the 4K feet in about a minute. Pretty good drop.

Pilot came out to the galley for some conversation when it was smooth and told me and the FA's that in his 17 years flying heavies, it was the worst he'd experienced. He said that the AC would need to undergo an inspection after arriving in Shanghai. Maybe Aluminumdriver could shed some light as to what this entails and how long it will take to turn the AC around after this incident.

I personally thought it was maybe an 8/10, but I was up front-- apparently it was worse in the aft cabin. It was clear air turbulence and it was pretty stunning to see the engine and pylon floating like a bumblebee on the wing. It only lasted about two minutes, but it really made me glad I was able to drop into my seat and get buckled in.

Just received this e-mail from UA------

On behalf of United Airlines I want to take this opportunity to reach out to you regarding your experience on Flight 835.

I realize how distressing it can be to experience unexpected turbulence during a flight. Please know that United and our United Express carriers utilize some of the best technology available to help ensure smooth air for our customers. Even so, turbulence can at times be unforeseen and simply unavoidable. That is one reason that United and our regional carriers take great care to ensure all of our flight crews are well-trained and able to handle any adverse situation. While the turbulence was brief and the flight continued without further incident, I can certainly appreciate any concern and anxiety you may have felt personally or on behalf of others. Thank you for your understanding of this unusual inflight event.

Your satisfaction and business mean a great deal to United and we look forward to our next opportunity to serve you in the near future.

Sincerely,
