Your identity was stolen? Really, did they apply for new credit cards, or anything?

You got ripped off, plain and simple. I'm not sure why they took the DL, sounds like they were after cash, mostly. If they had been professional, they would have taken the cards out, swiped the numbers, and put them back. Same with the cash, they would have taken some, but not all of it.
