i was in (award) Y earlier this week LHR-LAX-SFO but asked out of the blue at the check-in counter if i could switch to the direct flight. she made a phone call and voila! (the LAX flight wasn't oversold as far as i know, since they didn't seem to make any announcements to that effect while boarding it)
in any case, +1 re customs at SFO -- absolutely no line (idle agents, even) even after the F and C crowds (i was in the middle of E+).
