But can pilots listen in on the PA announcements made by the FA's? Even if they can, do they normally do that? It seems like that would get boring or distracting....
We can, but rarely do. Some Captains are in the habit of listening to the PA for a couple of seconds after giving the "descent" or "approach" chime, just to ensure that they heard the chime and are getting the cabin ready.
We can also listen in on the intercom. If two FAs are getting too chatty with each other on the intercom, we'll turn it off (too distracting), but a lot of pilots continually monitor it at a low volume.
